Introductory Remarks.
Scope. Very Forward Region: this document aims to establish the requirements of the very forward tracker of an experiment in the International Linear Collider. The very forward region will be defined for all practical purposes as the polar angle region ranging from 6 to 20 degrees (100 < &theta < 350 mrad or 0.94 < cos &theta < 0.995).
The delimitation of the angular region under consideration may seem somewhat arbitrary.
The lower limit of the polar angle range is driven by the accumulation of machine-induced background at small polar angle: in the section on backgrounds it will be shown that tracking below a certain polar angle is practically impossible.
While it is generally true that no detector region can be singled out completely, there are a number of specific issues - machine background, momentum resolution and vertexing of very forward tracks, to name a few examples - in the far forward region that merit a dedicated discussion.
This document is subdivided in a number of separate sections. In each of them a specific aspect of the tracking performance is addressed. The different sections can be read by themselves, but the reader is strongly advised to go through the general section on physics requirements before reading any of the following sections.
