Steps to get the work permit (excepcion del permiso de trabajo) in Spain

  1. Documento EX132: this is the work permit (WP) application form that we fill here on your behalf. To do this we need, in addition to your full name: place of birth
    country of birth
    married or single
    father's name
    mother's name
    nationality
  2. photocopy of valid passport
  3. photocopy of PhD degree, translated as indicated at your consulate
  4. 3 photographs, size indicated at your consulate

To work in Spain you need a residence visum (para actividades culturales y deportivas). So you should go to the Spanish consulate or embassy at your residence place with the following documents:

Steps to get the residence visum in Spain

  1. filled and signed residence visum application form, as provided by your Spanish consulate

  2. 3 photographs, size indicated at your consulate

  3. valid passport (at least for 4 months ahead)

  4. official police clearance record from residence place

  5. official medical record (indicated by consulate)

  6. copy of WP application ( Doc EX132, see above), sent by me once the Labor Departnment accepts your WP application. The important thing here is the NEV number

  7. letter from Science & Technology Ministry stating that you got the grant, and/or invitation letter from me.

If possible try to keep the original of the letter issued by the Spanish Ministry of Science & Technology with you, unless they really insist to have it. Usually they can xerox and stamp the copy in front of you (this process is called `` COMPULSA'')

Please note that all photocopies must be compulsadas (confronted with original and stamped by official, please ask help/information to your consulate). Moreover, all documents must be translated to Spanish by official translator (your consulate may help you tell who is authorized to translate) and stamped at Spanish consulate

After we apply for the WP we get the corresponding document, including the NEV number, and send you so that you can present at the Spanish Consulate as part of the residence visum application (point 6).

When the consulate accepts your visum application please ask for resguardo de solicitud containing the visum application number. It helps to fax us that to +34 96 3983520.

Once the WP is aproved the Labor Ministry authorizes to Foreign Affairs Ministry and this, in turn, authorizes your consulate to issue the visum. The time it takes varies a lot and it depends on the articulation of different Ministries. Also please bear in mind that some of the papers must be sent from the Valencia delegations to the central administration of the corresponding ministries in Madrid. Thus it can take a lot of time, from 4 to 12 months in total, not so easy to predict exactly. However, it always works.

Finally, if you are married you must ask what is need to get visa also for accompanying persons and this requires birth/marriage certificate official translations, etc. The procedure typically takes a bit longer.
