Doctoral course on CKM matrix, CP violation, and the fermion sector of the Standard Model

Resumen

Date: 4th - 8th June 2012, from 10:00 to 12:00h Place: Aula de Audiovisuales, Nave experimental del IFIC

Contents: In this course the fundamental concepts of the flavour sector of the Standard Model of Particle Physics will be presented. After a historical introduction, the Standard Model in the fermion sector will be explained in detail, with special emphasis on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM)matrix and CP violation. These topics are closely related to the decays of B mesons. We will highlight different experimental facilities (B factories, Tevatron, LHC) where these decays have been investigated with high precision to determine the fundamental parameters of the CKM matrix and the Unitary Triangle. In addition, a perspective of the future of Flavour Physics will be given, focusing on the development of the new Super-B factories (Super-B, Belle-II).

These lectures are crucial to understand quark and lepton interactions, and offer to the students a detailed picture of one of the most intriguing sectors of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. The Nobel prize of 2008, awarded to Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa, underlines the relevance and fundamental character of this topic.

The course will be given by Dr. Eli Ben-Haim (LPNHE, IN2P3/CNRS, Universitat Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris)
