Resumen
A deep underground laboratory is under construction at the site of the former Homestake gold mine in South Dakota, USA. Construction of underground caverns at the Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake is advancing and is expected to be completed by early 2012. Two experiments, the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) detector to search for dark matter and the MAJORANA Demonstrator to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, will begin installation in 2012. The Homestake site is also the proposed location for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in the USA. DUSEL is aimed to house experiments in long baseline neutrinos (from Fermilab), in next generation dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches or detection and potentially a diverse program in underground physics, biology and geosciences. The status of the Sanford Laboratory program and of the proposed DUSEL facility will be described.
