Resumen
I will report on the status and initial performance of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider that has recently started operations. First results will be shown from colliding-beam operations at the end of 2009, mainly at a centre-of-mass energy of 900 GeV. The real-life performance of the experiment will be compared with expectations. The prospects for early physics measurements from proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV will then be discussed, including the potential for early discoveries of new physics.
